Canadian Idol: Theo Tams is your new Canadian Idol
The National Post – The Ampersand
by Sarah Millar

“Theo Tams of Lethbridge, AB was crowned the season six Canadian Idol. Tams beat out Mitch MacDonald of Port Hood, N.S., who was known as the guitar hero.

After Ben Mulroney announced that Tams had won, he barely got out a thank you before breaking down in tears.

“First of all, I just want to say thanks to Mitch, he is such a great guy and has become such a great friend, and I’ll be first in line to buy his record,” Tams said before beginning to break down.

“Thanks so much.”

The Albertan only appeared in the bottom three during week seven. He said it was his trip back home to Alberta during the final few weeks of competition that showed him just how much he wanted to win.”

“The Ampersand had interviews with both MacDonald and Tams. Read our interview with MacDonald on Thursday and our interview with Tams on Friday.”

The Scarf Thing:

“MJ: I gotta tell you because when Christy (the PR liaison) brought you in here, I was like ‘no, bring the real Theo because I don’t see that guy wearing any scarves!

TT: I think it’s because when I lived in India, I just wore scarves all the time there. I was kind of tapping into my inner hippie side and ever since I came back, I just haven’t lost it. It’s more just out of habit. I am not trying to make a fashion statement or anything. It’s more just out of habit. They have become like a security blanket for me on the show.

MJ: All the ones that we see on the show are they all yours?

TT: Yeah.

MJ: How many do you think you have?

TT: Probably… I don’t have like that many. Close to 20 or 25. (Laughs).”

MJ: Were you laughing when they did that TSN recap of the performances and the turning point was you kicking the bench?

TT: Oh, that was so funny!

MJ: That was one of the funniest things that I have ever seen on the show.

TT: It was hilarious.”

“The battle had been billed as an East-meets-West showdown, with the 23-year-old Tams facing off against 22-year-old MacDonald, a carpenter from Port Hood, N. S.

But the differences didn’t end there, with the classically trained Tams wowing judges with a strong voice on sensitive ballads, while the doe-eyed MacDonald made a habit of offering up off-key renditions of lesser-known songs. “

Canadian Idol: The final two perform
September 09, 2008, by Sarah Millar

Good Mother by Jann Arden

“I saw a clip of Theo doing this at his homecoming and hoped I would see him do this song on Idol. It literally brought tears to my eyes. In the room, Theo captivated me. On television, Theo captivated me with it. It was honest, raw and just plain Theo. He stripped the song down, took away the Jann Arden vibe to it and made it his own (also it appeared that Theo did the song without any shoes on).”

Is that true? I can’t really tell from these clips and I haven’t watched my tape of the show yet. If so, right on, Theo. That’s pretty cool, and I Iove that you’re being true to yourself. Loved the song, it was surely one of your best on the show.

Theo: I Wanna Know What Love Is by Foreigner

“This choice surprised me. I wasn’t sure what to think of it at first, but this is where Theo really brought his game on. Theo worked the song, re-invented it and made it his own. Personally, I think this was the performance of the night: Theo came out and showed that he wanted to win this, no matter what the cost.”

I was also suprised by this one, I just can’t get past the Foreigner version in my head, so I also have to agree with the judges about the arrangement of this one. He sang the heck out of it though, and that was what made it great.

Idol Single

Theo: Sing

I’m not a big fan of this song title, but performance wise, and as always he came through quite strong vocally. I think it may grow on me a bit more if I do hear it on the radio (in a few days), but I truly hope this is no reflection of the song choices (and song names) for his forth-coming album.

Check out The Top 2 with one day to go (under Subway Fresh Moments)

Well I think I’ve got my answer on the shoeless Theo question “I always wear really nice shoes onstage and if I don’t wear really nice shoes I don’t wear any shoes at all.” Obviously in reference to my question on this blog (no, seriously, i’m sure he hasn’t even read my blog in the first place).

Did you notice that Mitch is wearing flip-flops? Now there’s a fashion statement.

U of L Hosts Canadian Idol Finale Live Broadcast, Wednesday, September 10

The 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness will be the location for the southern Alberta portion of the Canadian Idol finale live broadcast on Wednesday, September 10.

Theo Tams, a 22-year old Coaldale resident and University of Lethbridge student, is one of two finalists in the popular national talent competition, which airs nationally on the CTV network. Tams could be the next Canadian Idol.

CTV and Insight Productions have selected the University to be the location for the finale.

A limited number of tickets (2,000 due to fire regulations and seating / standing room capacity) are available for the venue and will be distributed in Coaldale, downtown Lethbridge and on the U of L campus beginning Monday, September 8 at noon.

Ticket distribution rules are as follows:

- Tickets are free

- Strict limit of 4 tickets per person.

- Rush seating — first come, first served at the venue.

- Bleacher, floor and standing room space only.

- No admission to the venue without a ticket

- Doors open at 4:30 p.m.

- Live broadcast begins at 6:00 p.m. Alberta time
(8:00 p.m. Eastern Standard time)

Ticket distribution locations are as follows.

Coaldale: Coaldale Food Market, corner of 19th St. and 20th Ave. Coaldale AB

Downtown Lethbridge: Lethbridge Herald 504, 7th St S. Lethbridge, AB

U of L Campus: Atrium, University Hall

People attending the event are encouraged to bring signs and tune up their cheering voices in order to be prepared for several live breaks in the program which will feature the crowd cheering for Theo, interviews with his family, a surprise guest, and other activities.

Plus, I found a couple of interesting Theo items on the U of L website.

Look Out for An Opera Sampler!

U of L students (l-r) Theo Tams, Lason Fitzgerald
and Melissa Larkin perform the roles of the
Count, Susanna and the Countess, respectively,
in the final act of The Marriage of Figaro — one
of three acts performed in An Opera Sampler! In
this scene, Susanna secretly watches the Count
woo the Countess.

An Opera Sampler! is a presentation of the U of
L Opera Workshop. It features three complete
acts from The Beggar’s Opera, The Medium and
The Marriage of Figaro, which will be sung in
English. “I chose the program to include a wide
variety of opera that spans some 300 years,”
says director Blaine Hendsbee (Music). “It
includes something for everyone. Short acts for
those new to opera, favourite scenes for opera
lovers and a wide variety of performing and
singing opportunities for my students.”

U of L Students in National Choir
“Michael Lowings, Peter Monaghan and Theo Tams have been selected for the National Youth Choir, which is part of the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors national conference in Victoria, BC, in May. “This is a real feather in our cap,” says Dr. George Evelyn, conductor of the U of L Singers. “Three of the four students selected to represent the province come from the U of L.” All three students are looking forward to the challenges and rewards of working with well-known conductor Richard Sparks of Pro Coro Canada. “There are only 40 members selected from across the country, so it is very exciting to be asked to join,” says Tams. “

Theo already planning for the future
By AL BEEBER Lethbridge Herald

“Tams will perform three songs Monday night in Monday’s finale.”

“But regardless of the outcome after Monday’s voting, Tams won’t be coming home again — at least to live. Voters will only have one night to vote, contrary to information sent out recently by the Canadian Press news service.”

““I won’t be coming back to Lethbridge or going back to school right now.”
Instead, Tams will embark on a musical journey that he hopes will last a lifetime.”

“Clearly my life has changed a lot in a short amount of time. It’s amazing how different things will be,” said Tams on the phone from Toronto.
“I won’t be coming back to Lethbridge or going back to school right now.”
Instead, Tams will embark on a musical journey that he hopes will last a lifetime.
“It’s been a crazy, crazy ride . . . I’ve been so busy it hasn’t sunk in yet.” he said of his path to the final of Idol.
Always humble, Tams is deeply appreciative of the support he’s received from fans across Canada.
“It’s such a satisfying feeling. I was always the quirky kid doing choir and writing poetry. I was always the outsider.”
Now Tams is a national phenomenon whose musicality has caught the ear and admiration of fans from coast to coast.
“It’s been unreal.”
“The horizon looks completely different than it did three months ago,” said Tams, who will spend Saturday workshopping in New York City with American soulman and pianist John Legend.”

“His favourite experience was with rock superstar Bryan Adams, whose work Tams performed Monday night.
Adams was clearly impressed with Tams and the admiration was mutual.
“Working with Bryan Adams was my favourite workshop. He was the most inspiring to me and was very direct in his comments. He brought things back to earth.””

““I’m just a wreck. I’ve been nervous constantly this week. I’m in a constant state of anxiousness . . . this has been my life for two-and-a half months and now it’s going to be over. Hopefully, some doors will open for me.”
A winner is guaranteed a record deal but Tams is prepared for the other scenario, as well.

Regardless of the outcome Wednesday, Tams knows the path he’ll be taking and he won’t be sprinting down it.
“You obviously want something great to come out of all this but you need to find someone who wants to work with you because they believe you have something to offer.”
And Tams needs to find someone he believes in, as well.
“I’m not going to rush into anything. I want to find a project I can be so proud of, that’s an extension of who I am.” Having a distinct vision of what he wants can have its pros and cons.”

University, city get behind Idol hopeful Theo Tams
By Caroline Zentner and Delon Shurtz

One of Theo Tams’ biggest fans is his three-and-a-half-year-old nephew, Tyson Van Zeggelaar.
The Canadian Idol contestant’s sister, Cara Van Zeggelaar, always called her younger brother “buddy” or “bud” so Theo is Uncle Bud to little Tyson.

“He takes his sign of Uncle Bud and he shows it to all the traffic and he hangs it outside the window. He’d take it to church if he could,” Cara said at the unveiling of a giant signboard on the University of Lethbridge campus just off University Drive early Monday afternoon.”

“That calm and collected demeanour has stood Theo in good stead. He could have auditioned for Canadian Idol sooner had he bowed to suggestion, especially after winning Lethbridge Idol.

“In the meantime, he’s had four years of music training under (U of L music professor) George Evelyn. That has been amazing for Theo in refining his voice,” Ed said.

Theo’s musical talent was evident early on. His parents recall noticing a clarity in his voice and ability to carry a tune in an elementary school concert.
In high school, Keith Griffioen, music and band teacher at Immanuel Christian High School, further nurtured Theo’s talent.
“Theo would like to say thanks to him too for all his support,” Margaret said.

Additional talents also revealed themselves.
“He was a clown. He could impersonate artists and do a phenomenal job,” Ed said, adding he was in Grade 8 when he did a rendition of Tracy Chapman singing Give Me One Reason. “We’d just be rolling.””

Friends sing Tams’ praises

“The Theo Tams you see on TV is the same guy you’d meet in person. That’s how the Canadian Idol standout’s close friend Melissa Reimchen describes the 22-year-old Coaldale native and University of Lethbridge student, who is wowing judges and fans with his show-stopping performances each week on the popular CTV singing talent showcase. “

“Reimchen has travelled to Toronto twice to support her best friend since he made the Canadian Idol top 24 list of contestants earlier this month. Watching him try to sing his way to a Canadian Idol crown isn’t the first time she has seen Tams try something different to enhance his personal development.

On his own will, he volunteered at an orphanage in India with a couple of his friends in 2006 from August to mid-December. There he taught children a bit of math, English and some music. He also helped with cooking meals and gathering daily supplies for families.”

““I think Theo just needed to do this for his own growth of a person and to explore the world because it’s the type of person he is. He is such an inspirational person and I have grown so much confidence in myself through my friendship with him.”
George Evelyn, who taught Tams prior to retiring from his post as a professor of music at the University of Lethbridge, says Tams exudes talent.
Tams studied under Evelyn in the Bachelor of Music program at the University of Lethbridge from 2004-2007, where he was taught the technical aspects of voice and conducting. Around this time, Tams was also a baritone with the University of Lethbridge Singers, a local singing group which Evelyn is the founding conductor.”

10 Questions with the Top 3

Theo Tams – Lethbridge, Alta.

“1. How does it feel to make it into the Top 3?

I would say besides really wanting to make it into the Top 10, the Top 3 was my next goal so I’m glad I was able to accomplish that.

2. What was your ‘KD Cups Hometown Tour’ like and how did it feel to see all the support?

I was pretty nervous about going home just because I knew it was going to be like a smack in the face with reality, just like how far I’ve come on the show already and it was good. It was really, really exciting. It was just so much fun to rock out with the hometown. I never expected there to be that much support. It was just really, really touching to see.

3. What do you think has gotten you this far in the competition and what’s your strategy to make it to the end?

Just going out there and like Farley has said, I just have visions for my performances and I know exactly what I want to accomplish and whether that’s the way I interpret the song or the way I perform the song or those two things together, I always know exactly what I want to do before I go out there.

My strategy is just to really show what I’m about. This week with Bryan Adams tunes, I am completely re-vamping them and really making them my own.

4. What’s one thing you’ve learned about yourself since being on Canadian Idol?

To trust my instincts.

5. What has been your favourite performance you’ve done so far?

My favourite would be “Sweet Ones” by Sarah Slean. I think that one was just closest to me and what I’m about. That groove, that feel, something really piano-oriented but still fun and serious all at the same time.

6. What’s the best meal you’ve had since being on Idol?

There was this one day in the Top 24 that they catered stuff to the theatre and there was a butter chicken and it was soooo good. Now all the time I’m like hoping on show days they’re going to have that Butter Chicken

7. What’s your favourite piece of clothing you’ve worn on the show?

I have a shirt with Miles Davis on it, which I really, really like and I would say the shirt that I wore for the results show this past week is also one of my favourites. It’s like some old scientist and he’s sitting at his desk and it’s in black and white and then you see all of these thoughts come out of his head and then that’s when they start throwing colour into it. It’s really cool.

8. What’s the funniest or craziest thing that’s happened while living with the other Idols?

(Last week) I woke up around quarter to five in the morning and I thought I smelled smoke and Earl had left a pizza in the oven and it was just burnt to a crisp. He had fallen asleep on the couch and then he woke up and he was complaining how he was still so hungry so he put in another pizza. I had to set the timer on the oven and he slept through the timer again so I had to get out of bed again to help him with his pizza. And then he tried to offer me some and I was not having it. I was like, ‘I need to go back to bed.’ That was pretty funny. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed that hard.

9. Do you have a good luck charm or any kind of ritual you do before going on stage?

If I’m not singing with the piano then I don’t really do anything but if I am with the piano, then I try to just sit at the piano for like 5, 10 minutes. I don’t know what it is; I’ve just always just done that. I always just sit with my hands on the keys and just sit there and warm up the keys.

10. What would make you a good Canadian Idol?

I already know the things I want to do and the things I want to accomplish and I’m just really, really driven and somehow I find a way of making those things a reality. I would just say I’m passionate, no matter what I do. If I’m making my bed or writing a song, I treat it like it’s the best thing that I’m doing that day. “

MacDonald and Tams jet off to New York City to workshop with five-time Grammy winner John Legend.

“Now, MacDonald and Tams jet off to New York City to workshop with five-time Grammy winner John Legend in advance of next week’s penultimate episode, airing Monday, September 8 at 9 p.m. ET. In the hour-long episode, MacDonald and Tams will perform three songs; a Judges choice, one song of their own choosing and the new Canadian Idol winner’s single.

For the first time in Canadian Idol history, The Top 2 will perform different winner’s singles, chosen to reflect their own individual styles. Past Idol final performance shows have seen the Top 2 sing the same single, but this Top 2 will perform individual songs crafted for them personally with the help of JUNO Award-winning producer Gavin Brown, who has worked with Canadian artists Billy Talent and Three Days Grace.

Although both songs will be featured, only one will be released to radio stations next Thursday morning at 5 a.m. ET after the winner is crowned.

Theo Tams will perform his single “Sing” and Mitch MacDonald will take to the stage for his single “Where We Begin”. “
