Canadian Idol: Theo Tams is your new Canadian Idol
The National Post – The Ampersand
by Sarah Millar

“Theo Tams of Lethbridge, AB was crowned the season six Canadian Idol. Tams beat out Mitch MacDonald of Port Hood, N.S., who was known as the guitar hero.

After Ben Mulroney announced that Tams had won, he barely got out a thank you before breaking down in tears.

“First of all, I just want to say thanks to Mitch, he is such a great guy and has become such a great friend, and I’ll be first in line to buy his record,” Tams said before beginning to break down.

“Thanks so much.”

The Albertan only appeared in the bottom three during week seven. He said it was his trip back home to Alberta during the final few weeks of competition that showed him just how much he wanted to win.”

“The Ampersand had interviews with both MacDonald and Tams. Read our interview with MacDonald on Thursday and our interview with Tams on Friday.”

The Scarf Thing:

“MJ: I gotta tell you because when Christy (the PR liaison) brought you in here, I was like ‘no, bring the real Theo because I don’t see that guy wearing any scarves!

TT: I think it’s because when I lived in India, I just wore scarves all the time there. I was kind of tapping into my inner hippie side and ever since I came back, I just haven’t lost it. It’s more just out of habit. I am not trying to make a fashion statement or anything. It’s more just out of habit. They have become like a security blanket for me on the show.

MJ: All the ones that we see on the show are they all yours?

TT: Yeah.

MJ: How many do you think you have?

TT: Probably… I don’t have like that many. Close to 20 or 25. (Laughs).”

MJ: Were you laughing when they did that TSN recap of the performances and the turning point was you kicking the bench?

TT: Oh, that was so funny!

MJ: That was one of the funniest things that I have ever seen on the show.

TT: It was hilarious.”

“The battle had been billed as an East-meets-West showdown, with the 23-year-old Tams facing off against 22-year-old MacDonald, a carpenter from Port Hood, N. S.

But the differences didn’t end there, with the classically trained Tams wowing judges with a strong voice on sensitive ballads, while the doe-eyed MacDonald made a habit of offering up off-key renditions of lesser-known songs. “

10 Questions with the Top 3

Theo Tams – Lethbridge, Alta.

“1. How does it feel to make it into the Top 3?

I would say besides really wanting to make it into the Top 10, the Top 3 was my next goal so I’m glad I was able to accomplish that.

2. What was your ‘KD Cups Hometown Tour’ like and how did it feel to see all the support?

I was pretty nervous about going home just because I knew it was going to be like a smack in the face with reality, just like how far I’ve come on the show already and it was good. It was really, really exciting. It was just so much fun to rock out with the hometown. I never expected there to be that much support. It was just really, really touching to see.

3. What do you think has gotten you this far in the competition and what’s your strategy to make it to the end?

Just going out there and like Farley has said, I just have visions for my performances and I know exactly what I want to accomplish and whether that’s the way I interpret the song or the way I perform the song or those two things together, I always know exactly what I want to do before I go out there.

My strategy is just to really show what I’m about. This week with Bryan Adams tunes, I am completely re-vamping them and really making them my own.

4. What’s one thing you’ve learned about yourself since being on Canadian Idol?

To trust my instincts.

5. What has been your favourite performance you’ve done so far?

My favourite would be “Sweet Ones” by Sarah Slean. I think that one was just closest to me and what I’m about. That groove, that feel, something really piano-oriented but still fun and serious all at the same time.

6. What’s the best meal you’ve had since being on Idol?

There was this one day in the Top 24 that they catered stuff to the theatre and there was a butter chicken and it was soooo good. Now all the time I’m like hoping on show days they’re going to have that Butter Chicken

7. What’s your favourite piece of clothing you’ve worn on the show?

I have a shirt with Miles Davis on it, which I really, really like and I would say the shirt that I wore for the results show this past week is also one of my favourites. It’s like some old scientist and he’s sitting at his desk and it’s in black and white and then you see all of these thoughts come out of his head and then that’s when they start throwing colour into it. It’s really cool.

8. What’s the funniest or craziest thing that’s happened while living with the other Idols?

(Last week) I woke up around quarter to five in the morning and I thought I smelled smoke and Earl had left a pizza in the oven and it was just burnt to a crisp. He had fallen asleep on the couch and then he woke up and he was complaining how he was still so hungry so he put in another pizza. I had to set the timer on the oven and he slept through the timer again so I had to get out of bed again to help him with his pizza. And then he tried to offer me some and I was not having it. I was like, ‘I need to go back to bed.’ That was pretty funny. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed that hard.

9. Do you have a good luck charm or any kind of ritual you do before going on stage?

If I’m not singing with the piano then I don’t really do anything but if I am with the piano, then I try to just sit at the piano for like 5, 10 minutes. I don’t know what it is; I’ve just always just done that. I always just sit with my hands on the keys and just sit there and warm up the keys.

10. What would make you a good Canadian Idol?

I already know the things I want to do and the things I want to accomplish and I’m just really, really driven and somehow I find a way of making those things a reality. I would just say I’m passionate, no matter what I do. If I’m making my bed or writing a song, I treat it like it’s the best thing that I’m doing that day. “

MacDonald and Tams jet off to New York City to workshop with five-time Grammy winner John Legend.

“Now, MacDonald and Tams jet off to New York City to workshop with five-time Grammy winner John Legend in advance of next week’s penultimate episode, airing Monday, September 8 at 9 p.m. ET. In the hour-long episode, MacDonald and Tams will perform three songs; a Judges choice, one song of their own choosing and the new Canadian Idol winner’s single.

For the first time in Canadian Idol history, The Top 2 will perform different winner’s singles, chosen to reflect their own individual styles. Past Idol final performance shows have seen the Top 2 sing the same single, but this Top 2 will perform individual songs crafted for them personally with the help of JUNO Award-winning producer Gavin Brown, who has worked with Canadian artists Billy Talent and Three Days Grace.

Although both songs will be featured, only one will be released to radio stations next Thursday morning at 5 a.m. ET after the winner is crowned.

Theo Tams will perform his single “Sing” and Mitch MacDonald will take to the stage for his single “Where We Begin”. “

Goodbye, Mark!! I really have to wonder why on earth Mitch is still there though? He’s the definitely worst one left, I can’t even stand to watch him at all. Why isn’t he at least in the bottom 3 this week instead of Theo and Earl?

Well, It’s finally Sebastian, he looked genuinely shocked last week when Katherine was eliminated instead. I’m sure he was hoping to be the one to go this week, after last week’s comments from the judges. “You look great…” over and over, by the time Farley was through with his comment, Sebastian just looked so completely frustrated.

Canadian Idol: One-on-One with Adam Castelli

I had high hopes for you Adam, I also thought you had better taste. Amberly is your pick for Canadian Idol?! Tell me, does she sound better live or something?…because it certainly isn’t translating through to my TV.

Next Week the Top 9 competitors perform on Rock ‘n Roll Heaven week! Season five Idol runner-up Jaydee Bixby will perform on the July 22 results show.

So long Adam, we’ll miss you.

July 15, 2008

Adam Castelli was voted off tonight. I knew he wouldn’t make it to the top five, even though he’s probably my personal favourite. It’s so unfair, he finally puts in the performance all of his fans knew he could, with the entrance to end all Canadian Idol entrances, and he gets voted off. If he was going to be voted off in favour of Mark Day, and Amberly and Mitch (who even giving his best performance by far was still BO-RING) it should have been last week for his uninspiring performance of “If I Was a Carpenter.”

This brings me to my personal pet-peeve of the moment, “worsters.” For those of you unfamiliar with the term, these are the people who “vote for the worst,” this season the designated worst being Mark Day, as a kind of joke on the producers and viewers of Canadian Idol. This is what passes for humour with these people, watch an hour and a half of a show you profess to hate in order to obtain the number to vote for a bad singer so that this person will continue to progress and the show will be made to look stupid. Of course, the producers are having the last laugh as they’re paid by advertisers based on the number of people watching the show (or more importantly the commercials) whether it is to laugh at the show or to actually enjoy it doesn‘t affect their revenue. That’s right “worsters,” your doing exactly what CTV and Canadian Idol want you to do, watch and vote, they don’t care why or what-for. But more importantly, why do this? Why ruin others people’s harmless fun? I personally hate hockey (and most professional sports) but I don’t have a website that advocates people buy tickets only for the worst teams so that the league is made to “look stupid” or that people throw rock-salt on the ice in order to disrupt the proper progression of the game. Why not you ask? Because other people’s innocent fun is their business and not mine. I don’t enjoy hockey so I don’t watch it, I don’t destroy someone else’s wholesome fun.

So, “worsters,” (many of whom I am sure are probably laughing as you read this ‘cause you’ve irritated some fans of an admittedly un-cool but nonetheless fun show), you need to get lives and ignore an otherwise inoffensive summer distraction if you do not enjoy it. If you are pressed for summer fun you’re going to have to get back to the bear-baiting, all midget mud-wrestling or finger-painting you used to fill your time with.
