Top 16 Performances Review Pt. 1

July 9, 2008

Martin Kerr started things off with Coldplay’s “Fix You.” You know he’s wanted to do Coldplay all along, well, now he’s done and now he can home….. Boring, boring and did I mention boring? Oh yeah, don’t mouth off to the judges, for the record, Zack isn’t competing.

Then there was Theo Tams who sang the girliest of girl’s songs with Colbie Caillat’s “Bubbly”. Well he made it a little (a little) less girlie, but frankly, this performance didn’t make me want to care. He’s probably the most talented person competing and my personal my pick for #1, but this performance just doesn’t cut it. The only thing that redeems this performance is his immense talent. Did I mention not to mouth off to the judges, really.

Amberly Thiessen from took the stage next with “You and I Both” by Jason Mraz. Zack said it all, sing a song that’s got star power, and wear something you wouldn’t wear to work to Starbucks, which incidentally is where you’ll be seeing her next week… “tall, or grande?” I really don’t get why the judges keep raving about her.

Adam Castelli followed up with the Bobby Darin version of “If I Were a Carpenter.” Another one of the real stars on the show this year in my humble opinion, but this performance was just bland, I can hardly remember it already. Sadly, one of the best performances of the night.

Up next was Marie-Pierre Bellerose with Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart.” Just don’t do this song. No one can sing like Janis and everyone has tried, in every bar band and every karaoke night ever. Good-bye.

Omar Lunan from Scarborough, Ont., was next with Garth Brooks’ “If Tomorrow Never Comes.” Garth Brooks?… Really? Probably the most talented person this season after Theo, but this was just not his best performance, and there were parts that seemed off key. My only question is, is the world ready for the return of Boys 2 Men.

Then came Mark Day singing “Against All Odds” by Phil Collins. He didn’t beat those odds. This sounds like a bad karaoke performance. Like Farley said, he was all over the map vocally, first he’s flat, then he’s sharp, then there’s the fact that he doesn’t have the right tone of voice for this song (think a man’s voice). I think Ben said it all when he said Phil Collins disappeared from film forever. Just like Mark Day did after Top 16.

The last performer of the night was Mookie Morris singing “Valerie” by the Zutons. First off, the Mook-walk doesn’t look nearly as cool without a guitar. Seems like a groovy little song but I couldn’t really hear him singing. The song was cool, but it was really just not memorable.

Are all of the singers getting home sick? All I could think was “these people WANT to get sent home, even the talented ones. Please guys (and girls), step up and show off what you have or don’t bother showing up at all. This is only week 3 of the real competition you can’t be fading out just yet.

Adam Castelli – Audition Video

July 6, 2008
This is Adam Castelli’s Hamilton Audition for Canadian Idol Season 6 as seen on June 10, 2008

My Comments:

I don’t care for the rap-y stuff at the start of the song, but it does improve. It shows off his strong, clear voice later in the song he choose.

What song is he singing in the bar on here? It sounds like a good one, seems to suit his voice quite well, of what I heard anyhow.

My advice to Adam for future performances – stay away from the fakey hip hop stuff. Um, Yeah, Adam “You’re NOT black!” What the heck was that?
