Top 16 Performances Review Pt. 2

By k369

The second group of competitors in Canadian Idol’s Top 16

Mitch MacDonald was up first with “Blue” by The Jay Hawks. How did this guy get this far? Not a very good song and the performance is tiny talent time. This guy has NO charisma and a pleasant but bland voice.

Up next was Gary Morissette with “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals. Another song that NO one should do, especially this guy. What is this White Zombie with a hint of Nirvana. Scary. On so many levels. At least he did a different take on the song.

Katelyn Dawn was next with “Zombie” by The Cranberries. Why, why, why, why? I’m not even sure Dolores O’Riordan should do this song. At least she seems to get this is not a happy song, unlike what she did to She Talks to Angels, for which she should have been voted off. Best part of that performance was that it lasted less than 2 minutes long.

Oliver Pigott was up next with “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers. Why is Henry Rollins doing Bill Withers. Definitely funky, but this guy needs to learn what songs suit him. I really want to like this guy, but he needs help with his song choices. I think the judges are commenting on his potential instead of his performance.

Sebastian Pigott sang “Bring it On Home To Me” by Sam Cooke. This guy has sung in too many bars and it shows. This song was way out of his range (like most songs). He’s a definite performer and I’d totally go to see his show if it came to town, but Idol he’s not. Nice harmonica playing though.

Earl Stevenson was next with Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone.” Not a surprise choice for this guy. This is Earl’s last show. I really enjoyed his previous performances but this one doesn’t stand up. Sass said it was “dope,” I think she meant that it made her think of the dope he obviously smokes a lot of.

Katherine St-Laurent was next with Pat Benatar’s “Love is a Battlefield.” Wow, bad, right out of the gate. She’s clearly getting by on the Quebec vote, but they’ve got to start voting for someone who has some rhythm, or can sing the songs he/she selects. Maybe she should sing some Celine, at least her terrible English would be appropriate.

Drew Wright was the last performer of the night with “The Reason” by Hoobastank. Why’s this guy still on? Can’t sing on key and no star power. And what “where are they now?” compilation did he resurrect this song from?
